YIC, CAS’ Success in Hosting the 6th Cross-strait Workshop on Soil and Groundwater Pollution and Renovation

Sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and hosted by Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (YIC, CAS), the 6th Cross-strait Workshop on Soil and Groundwater Pollution and Renovation was successfully held in Yantai, Shandong Province, China from August 26th to 28th. LOICZ East Asia Node, as one of supporters, also took active part in organizing the workshop.

Mr. Lingyu Gao, the party secretary of YIC, CAS, chaired the workshop. Professor Yongming Luo, the acting director of YIC, CAS and the director of LOICZ East Asia Node, together with some concerned top officials attended and addressed the opening ceremony, including Mr. Wei Li, the director of the Cross-strait Science and Technology Communication Center, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mr. Songlin Zhang, the deputy director of the Science and Technology Cooperation Center, CAS, Mr. Yingjun Sun, the vice secretary-general of Yantai Municipal Committee of the CPC and the director of Taiwan Affairs Office of Yantai City, and Mr. Jiaxun Chen, the director-general of Taiwan Soil and Groundwater Environmental Protection Association.

The 6th Workshop was hosted successfully in cooperation with many other concerned associations, such as Soil Environment Specialty Committee, the Soil Science Society of China (SSSC), Taiwan Association of Soil and Groundwater Environment Protection and so on. It has also received strong support from many scientific research institutes, universities, key laboratories and companies across the Taiwan Straits, such as Institute of Soil Science, CAS, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Tsinghua University, etc.

A total of 250 scholars attended the workshop, among whom 41 are from Taiwan. 91 participants submitted their abstracts and 55 delivered oral presentations on the following key topics:

1.    Laws, regulations and standards of soil, sediment and groundwater pollution prevention and renovation

2.    Investigation techniques of soil, sediment and groundwater pollution and its application

3.    Risk assessment of human health and ecological environment at contaminated sites                  

4.    Remediation techniques of soil, sediment and groundwater pollution and its application       

5.    Strategies for sustainable risk management at contaminated sites

With the communication at the workshop, scientists and scholars further realized the seriousness of soil and groundwater pollution and the urgency of research work. The workshop has played an important role in promoting academic exchanges and future scientific research.

Since 2002, the Cross-strait Workshop on Soil and Groundwater Pollution and Renovation has been held every two years in Chinese mainland and Taiwan alternately. As the soil and groundwater pollution and renovation is vital to the national economy and people's livelihood, the conference organizing committee has decided to hold the workshop every year since 2013. The 7th Cross-strait Workshop on Soil and Groundwater Pollution and Renovation will be held in Kaoshiong City, Taiwan in 2013.
